I went to the Camarillo shelter to pick up three dogs that had been prearranged for transfer to the Simi shelter for further transport to Tucson, AZ.
As we were filling out the paper work, I was informed that the staff had went ahead and killed the one we called k-6 as we had just completed his pull paperwork. It was that fast. One minute we had him almost saved, paperwork in hand. Next moment he was dead. It happened that fast. It was just an oops on the kennel staff’s part. It was a big oops as far as I saw it.
Absolutely no dogs are safe in the Camarillo shelter, unless they are out the door and in your car. I did the evaluation on these three and came to know all of them well. Little number six weighed in at maybe 35 lbs. I could tell he had not seen much love in his short life and now he will see no more. This is not the first time this has happened and I am sure it won’t be the last. All we in rescue can do is strive for one more dog getting to safety. One dog at a time.
