This Thursday, Friday and Saturday (September 27-29) I took 33 dogs up north for them to begin a new life. Some were already adopted before we even left. Here they wouldn’t have a chance; up north they will get adopted into very loving families and begin a life that they should have had down here. People always ask why not, and we have to explain that there just aren’t enough homes for them all. It takes a huge effort by all concerned parties to make this happen. It’s by all working together that we are able to do this. And it costs. The rescue will have invested an average of $300-$400 in every dog by the time it gets up north. There are transport fees, vet fees, boarding fees and shelter pull fees. It’s not cheap folks. But is it worth it? Just ask the dogs. If not for these folks all would have been dead days ago. Is it worth it to that dog? I would say so. And I am sure the dogs agree.
An Odyssey
Not all rescues are created equal. When I get a call from one that I have not been rescuing for, I check them out with other rescues in their area. All rescues that I pull for sign a release for the dog and sign an affidavit attesting that they do not know of any issues that can cause the 501 to lose its pulling right at shelters. And not all rescues are created equal. Some will lie and not be as forthcoming about their past issues as they should be. That’s what happened in this case. I was contacted to pull for a rescue that has had issues in the past. I would not pull for them, but I couldn’t leave the dogs to die either. After contacting a few other rescues, they agreed to take them, so I pulled them from the shelter and put them up at a local 501 shelter for the night. I picked them back up on Monday and off to a vet office we went. From there they will be picked up by the rescue groups and move on to a foster/adopt home in short order. This has been one of those situations that didn’t need to happen if the truth had been told up front. There are just too many eyes out there for people to think they can hide issues anymore.
